About Murtoa
Murtoa is a town in the Wimmera region of Victoria, around Lake Marma on the Wimmera Highway, in the Shire of Yarriambiack. First settled by German farming families in the early 1870s and surveyed as a township in 1873, its name is an Aboriginal word said to mean home of the lizard. When the Melbourne to Adelaide railway reached the town in 1878 it grew into one of the state's major wheat storage and freight centres. Murtoa is famous for the Stick Shed, a huge emergency grain store built in 1941 on a forest of poles, the last of its kind in Australia and listed on the National Heritage Register.
