About Carrum Downs
Carrum Downs is a suburb of Melbourne about 48 km south-east of the central business district, in the City of Frankston, on land that was once the drained Carrum Carrum swamp. The name comes from the pre-settlement word Karrum Karrum, meaning boomerang, and the area was a market-gardening district where the Carrum potato variety was developed in the early 1900s. Growth accelerated with the Botany Park estate from the late 1970s and the opening of the EastLink freeway in 2008, and the suburb is home to the Pines Flora and Fauna Reserve and Victoria's largest Hindu temple.
