About Clayton
Clayton is a suburb about 18 km south-east of Melbourne's central business district, in the City of Monash. It is named after the solicitor John Clayton, who lived on a property called Clayton Vale between 1865 and 1877, and grew up around the railway to Dandenong where it crossed Clayton Road. Clayton is best known as the site of Monash University, which opened its first campus there in 1961, and has a shopping strip along Clayton Road.
