About Clayton South
Clayton South is a residential and industrial suburb of Melbourne, about 20 km south-east of the central business district within the City of Kingston. The area began as coastal heathland and market gardens, part of one of Victoria's largest horticultural districts, before residential and industrial growth from the late 1950s, including a Volkswagen assembly plant near Westall. The suburb takes its name from John Hughes Clayton, an early landowner. The Westall area, where the railway station and main road run, is remembered for Australia's largest mass UFO sighting at the local high school in 1966.
