About Sassafras (Vic.)

Sassafras is a township and locality in the Dandenong Ranges, 43 km east of Melbourne, spanning the City of Knox and the Shire of Yarra Ranges, about 500 m above sea level in a saddle on the ranges ridgeline a few kilometres south of Mount Dandenong. Originally called Sassafras Gully, after the native sassafras trees growing in the damp gully of Sassafras Creek, the land was opened for selection in 1893. Guest houses made it one of the leading resorts in the ranges by 1918, and today it is a tourist village of boutiques, cafes and nurseries.
