About Olinda (Vic.)
Olinda is a town high in the Dandenong Ranges of Victoria, about 37 km east of Melbourne within the Yarra Ranges Shire. It began as a timber splitters' camp supplying palings for Melbourne's 1880s building boom, and grew through closer settlement and berry farming in the 1890s before developing into a popular guest-house resort. Olinda is home to the Dandenong Ranges Botanic Garden, formerly the National Rhododendron Gardens, and hosted the first Melbourne International Film Festival in 1952. The name comes from Olinda Creek, named in 1858 after Alice Olinda Hodgkinson.
