About The Basin (Vic.)
The Basin is a suburb in the outer east of Melbourne, in the City of Knox, on the foothills of the Dandenong Ranges about 31 kilometres from the city centre. It was named around 1860 by botanist Ferdinand von Mueller because it lies in a basin surrounded by hills. First settled from the 1860s, the suburb retains a hills character and borders the Dandenong Ranges National Park.
