About Powelltown

Powelltown is a small town in the Upper Yarra Valley in Victoria, about 70 kilometres east of Melbourne in the Shire of Yarra Ranges. It was established in the early 1900s as a company town of the Victorian Powell Wood Process Company, which milled the mountain ash forests of the surrounding ranges; the post office took the name Powelltown in 1912. The timber tramways that once carried logs to the mills now form walking tracks through mountain ash and cool temperate rainforest, and the town is a base for bushwalking, including the trail to the Ada Tree.
