About Melbourne Airport
Melbourne Airport is a suburb about 18 km north-west of the central business district in the City of Hume, the location of the airport of the same name, generally known as Tullamarine, and the Tullamarine Country Club. The airport was approved by the federal government in 1960 and built on more than 2,000 hectares of former farming land, with the international terminal opening in 1970. It took over from Essendon as Melbourne's main airport and has operated as the city's principal gateway since then.
