About Research

Research is a residential suburb of Melbourne in the Shire of Nillumbik, Victoria, located 28 kilometres north-east of the Melbourne CBD. Settled in the 1850s with extensive orchards by the 1860s, the suburb was originally called Swiper's Gully during the Victorian gold rush. After unsuccessful initial prospecting, gold was found when the gully was searched again, leading to the name Research Gully, later shortened to Research. One of the highest bushfire risks in Australia due to prolific eucalyptus and melaleuca paperbark trees, Research is an ecologically protected zone with diverse fauna and flora. The suburb is home to Eltham College and Research Primary School.
