About Eltham (Vic.)

Eltham is a suburb of Melbourne about 20 km north-east of the central business district, in the Shire of Nillumbik, set where Diamond Creek meets the Yarra River. First subdivided from the 1850s and reached by railway in 1902, it is famous for the Montsalvat artist community, whose rustic medieval-style buildings date from the 1930s, and for its historic wooden railway trestle bridge, the last of its kind used by suburban trains in Melbourne. The Diamond Valley Railway, the largest ridable miniature railway in Australia, has operated in the suburb since 1960.
