About Macleod (Vic.)
Macleod is a residential suburb in Melbourne, about 14 km north-east of the central business district, in the Cities of Banyule and Darebin. The suburb grew from the Strathallan estate and owes its foundation to the Mont Park hospital complex opened in 1910 and the railway station on the Hurstbridge line that opened in 1911, named after local landowner Malcolm Anderson Macleod. Development was slow until after World War II but became rapid in the 1950s and 1960s, and the former hospital sites have since been redeveloped for housing and La Trobe University facilities, beside the Gresswell Forest wildlife reserve.
