About Watsonia
Watsonia is a residential suburb in the City of Banyule, located 16 kilometres north-east of Melbourne's Central Business District. Originally inhabited by the Wurundjeri people, the area was first surveyed by Robert Hoddle in 1838 as part of the parish of Keelbundoora. The suburb takes its name from Frank Watson, an early twentieth-century landowner who subdivided his Grace Park estate for housing in 1924 and funded the construction of the local railway station on the Hurstbridge line. The Watsonia Military Camp was established nearby during World War II and is now the site of the Simpson Army Barracks. The suburb features a shopping precinct along Watsonia Road, schools including Loyola College, and proximity to Gresswell Forest and the Plenty Gorge Parklands.
