About Braeside
Braeside is a largely industrial suburb 26 km south-east of Melbourne, immediately east of Mordialloc. Its name comes from a horse stud and training establishment set up by Dr Arthur Syme, son of The Age proprietor David Syme, on land bought from the Keys family in 1909. A sewage treatment plant built by the metropolitan water authority operated here from 1940 to 1980, and the site is now Braeside Park, a wetlands and woodland reserve. The racehorse Phar Lap was stabled at Braeside in 1930.
