About Matlock
Matlock is a locality high in the Victorian alpine region of the Great Dividing Range, on the Walhalla Road between Marysville and Walhalla, spanning the Shires of Mansfield and Yarra Ranges. It is named for the goldfields township first called Emerald Hill and renamed Matlock in 1864, which at its original site, 1,213 metres above sea level, was the highest township in Victoria. The town grew as a trading centre between the Woods Point and Jordan goldfields, peaked at around 300 residents, and was largely destroyed by fire in 1873, leaving only ruins.
