About Woods Point (Vic.)

Woods Point is a town on the banks of the Goulburn River in the Shire of Mansfield, about 179 km north-east of Melbourne. It began as a general store built by Henry Wood to serve the gold diggings of the Morning Star Reef; by 1864 the settlement was thriving with 36 hotels. Much of the town was rebuilt after the devastating 1939 bushfires, and the Morning Star Mine operated until 1963. Two gold mines still work in the area.
