About Jericho (Vic.)

Jericho is a locality in the Baw Baw Shire of Victoria that was the main settlement of the goldfield on the Jordan River, north-west of Walhalla. Prospectors rushed to the steep, rugged Jordan valley in 1861 after gold was found, and by early 1862 some 4000 miners were working the river and creeks. The township grew at the junction of the Jordan River and B.B. Creek but had declined by the 1870s; its school closed in 1925, the last hotel in 1935, and the area is now within the catchment of the Thomson Reservoir.
