About Sailors Gully
Sailors Gully is an outer northern suburb of Bendigo in north central Victoria, about 8.5 kilometres north-west of the city centre and immediately west of Eaglehawk. Gold was discovered there in the first half of 1852, reportedly by sailors who had deserted their ships for the diggings, giving the locality its name. Its gold-mining heritage is preserved at the heritage-listed New Moon Quartz mine site, and its first school opened in 1855.
