About Barkers Creek
Barkers Creek is an agricultural and horticultural locality in the Shire of Mount Alexander in Victoria, midway between Castlemaine and Harcourt. In 1851 four employees of the pastoralist Dr William Barker found gold in Specimen Gully, a tributary of Barkers Creek, the first formally recognised discovery in the district that led to the Mount Alexander gold diggings. A cairn erected in 1931 commemorates the find.
