About Springdallah

Springdallah is a rural locality in the Golden Plains Shire of the Ballarat region in Victoria, located about 20 kilometres east of Ballarat and 117 kilometres from Melbourne. Named from an Aboriginal language, the area became a significant deep lead gold mining field from about 1859, with companies mining buried river beds along Woady Yaloak Creek. The goldfield stretched 8 kilometres east-west and comprised a network of nine settlements including Piggoreet, Happy Valley, and Golden Lake, with miners mainly from northern England, southwest Ireland, and the Scottish lowlands. Heritage-listed deep lead mine sites remain on Donald Mcleans Road, though the goldfield communities have largely vanished with only mullock heaps and ruined buildings remaining.
