About St Mary
St Mary is a rural locality in the Fraser Coast Region of Queensland, located about 30 kilometres southwest of Maryborough and 229 kilometres north of Brisbane. The Mary River forms the southern boundary, with St Mary State Forests covering most of the area and peaks including Mount Bererum at 238 metres and Mount Benarige at 251 metres. St Mary's Forest Station operated from 1935 to 1980 as a major hub for native hardwood timber extraction, at its peak supporting 70 to 80 residents with barracks, married quarters, a blacksmith shop, stables for 50 horses, and a primary school. The site is now the Sandy Creek Outdoor Learning Centre and is listed on the Fraser Coast Local Heritage Register, while endangered greater gliders have been found in the state forest.
