About Kawungan

Kawungan is a residential suburb of Hervey Bay in the Fraser Coast Region, Queensland, situated approximately 3 kilometres south-east of Pialba and 298 kilometres north of Brisbane. The name derives from the Kabi language of the Butchulla people, combining kai wung, meaning scrub magpie, with dha or gun, meaning place. Officially named and bounded by the Queensland Place Names Board on 1 September 1980, the suburb was previously part of Pialba. The terrain is mostly flat, ranging from 20 to 30 metres above sea level, with some hillier ground to the south. Kawungan contains the heritage-listed Colonsay Farm at 125 Doolong Road, formerly known as Doolong Farm, which was established in 1879 as the district's first sugar cane farm.
