About Booral (Qld)
Booral is a coastal locality in the Fraser Coast Region of Queensland, located 22 kilometres southeast of Hervey Bay on the shores of Hervey Bay. The name is from the Kabi language meaning either tall relating to the sky god Beiral or burrall meaning place of shell mounds. Many shell mounds are found along the coastline from Aboriginal feasting on shellfish. Aboriginal people travelled from the Bunya Mountains to trade bunya nuts for shellfish and are believed to have inhabited the area for over 6,000 years. Edgar Thomas Aldridge established the Booral Homestead in the 1850s. The locality's proximity to the Great Sandy Strait enables salt water aquaculture including fish, sea cucumbers and soft shell crabs. The Booral Community Association actively advocates for public foreshore access.
