About Upper Haughton
Upper Haughton is a rural locality in the Townsville region of Queensland, located about 72 kilometres southeast of Townsville in the Shire of Burdekin. Bounded by the Haughton River to the west and Barratta Creek to the northeast, the terrain ranges from 10 to 274 metres above sea level with mountains including Clayhole Hills, Horse Camp Hill, and Piccaninny Mountain in the west. Named after the Haughton River, originally named after stockman Richard Houghton by pastoralist and explorer James Cassady, the north-east of the locality is predominantly sugarcane growing served by cane tramways transporting harvested cane to the Invicta sugar mill in Giru.
