About Horseshoe Lagoon

Horseshoe Lagoon is a sparsely populated rural locality in the Shire of Burdekin, Queensland, situated about 33 kilometres west of Ayr across flat tropical hinterland. The Haughton River forms the western boundary of the locality, and the Horseshoe Lagoon Conservation Park, a permanent freshwater lagoon on the river's right bank, is part of the Burdekin-Haughton wetlands aggregation listed in the Directory of Important Wetlands in Australia. Over 88 bird species have been recorded in the park, including magpie geese, brolgas and cotton pygmy-geese, and the surrounding land supports sugarcane farming and cattle grazing.
