About Home Hill
Home Hill is a rural town and locality in the Shire of Burdekin in tropical north Queensland, situated on the delta of the Burdekin River approximately 12 kilometres south of Ayr. The town was established in 1912 to support farming communities cut off from Ayr by the unbridged Burdekin River, and the name is linked to the Battle of Inkerman in the Crimean War. Home Hill is the centre of a major sugarcane-growing district, served by the Inkerman Sugar Mill, and is notable for the Burdekin Bridge, a 1,097-metre multi-span structure completed in 1957 and one of the longest of its type in Australia.
