About Ayr
Ayr is a rural town and locality in the Shire of Burdekin in North Queensland, on the delta of the Burdekin River, about 70 km south-east of Townsville. Established in 1882 and named after Ayr, Scotland, the birthplace of Queensland Premier Thomas McIlwraith, it is the administrative centre of the shire and the heart of a sugar-growing district that produces more sugar cane per square kilometre than any other in Australia.
