About Tewantin

Tewantin is a town on the Noosa River on the Sunshine Coast of Queensland, its name derived from the Kabi Kabi language and said to mean place of dead logs or trees, a reference to timber logs floating on the river. Escaped convicts were among the first Europeans in the area in the 1820s, and the first settlers arrived in the 1860s to cut cedar and kauri, timber demand surging after gold was found at Gympie in 1867. The town was surveyed in 1871 by Clarendon Stuart, and Tewantin served as the river port for the district until the railway reached Gympie in 1891.
