About Thornborough
Thornborough is a former gold-mining town in the Hodgkinson Minerals Area of far north Queensland, about 80 km west of Cairns. The rush began in 1876 after James Venture Mulligan's gold discoveries, and the town, named after Premier George Thorn, soon had more than a thousand residents alongside the neighbouring town of Kingsborough, with 20 hotels between them. The reefs were worked out within decades, and Thornborough is today a grazing locality dotted with old mine workings.
