About Stokes
Stokes is an outback locality in the Shire of Carpentaria, Queensland, named after Captain John Lort Stokes who commanded HMS Beagle and surveyed the Gulf of Carpentaria coastline in the 1840s. The Leichhardt River forms its western boundary, with the Alexandra, Cloncurry, Flinders and Saxby rivers all flowing northward through the flat pastoral landscape. The Burke Developmental Road passes through the locality, and a distinctive hill known as Bang Bang Jump Up provides a popular lookout over the surrounding Gulf Country plains.
