About Normanton
Normanton is an outback town in Queensland's Gulf Country, on the Norman River about 40 km from its mouth on the Gulf of Carpentaria. Proclaimed in 1868 and named after Captain W. H. Norman, it grew as a port and supply centre for the Gulf hinterland, gaining a telegraph line and school in 1872 and its own borough council in 1886. The heritage-listed Gulflander train still links the town to Croydon.
