About Laura (Qld)
Laura is a town on the Peninsula Developmental Road in Far North Queensland, in the country of the Kokowara and Kokojawa peoples. It grew as a staging point on the road from Cooktown to the Palmer River goldfields after gold was discovered in 1873, and the Cooktown-to-Laura railway reached the town by 1888. Laura is best known as the centre for one of the world's largest collections of prehistoric rock art, the Quinkan Country galleries, and hosts the biennial Laura Quinkan Dance Festival. It also lies near the entrance to Rinyirru (Lakefield) National Park.
