About Hope Vale
Hope Vale is an Aboriginal community on Cape York Peninsula, about 46 km north-west of Cooktown in a valley of tropical bushland. It grew out of the Cape Bedford Lutheran mission founded in 1886, and the Guugu Yimidhirr language spoken there contributed the word kangaroo to English after Captain Cook's 1770 visit to the region. The community was forcibly moved south during the Second World War and re-established as Hope Vale in 1949, and in 1986 it became the first Aboriginal community in Queensland to hold a Deed of Grant in Trust.
