About Croydon (Qld)

Croydon is an outback town in the Shire of Croydon in Queensland, located 529 kilometres west of Cairns in the heart of the Gulf Savannah. Gold was discovered in 1885 and by 1887 the town's population had reached 7,000, making it the fourth largest town in the colony of Queensland. The Croydon to Normanton railway line operates the Gulflander tourist train, opened for the gold rush in 1891. The town features numerous heritage-listed sites including the Croydon Shire Hall built in 1892 and the Chinese Temple and Settlement Site. The town was mentioned in Nevil Shute's 1950 novel A Town Like Alice.
