About Sandstone Point

Sandstone Point is a coastal locality in the City of Moreton Bay, Queensland, situated approximately 52 kilometres north of Brisbane where Pumicestone Channel meets Deception Bay, directly across the Bribie Island Bridge from Bribie Island. Originally known as Toorbul Point, the area takes its name from the sandstone headland and was historically significant as a gathering place for the Ningy Ningy people, whose ceremonial bora ring south of Bestman Road once hosted upwards of 2,000 Aboriginal people for ritual purposes. During World War II, the locality served as the site of an Allied amphibious training base. A heritage-listed 1867 hydrographic survey bench mark, comprising two broad arrows and a "U" carved into a sandstone ledge by British Admiralty surveyors, survives as evidence of early maritime charting of Moreton Bay.
