About Proserpine
Proserpine is a rural town in the Whitsunday Region, Queensland, located about 100 km north of Mackay on the Bruce Highway. Set along the Proserpine River, it is surrounded by fertile alluvial floodplains devoted to sugarcane cultivation and cattle grazing. The name derives from the Roman goddess Proserpina, reflecting the area's perceived fertility. European settlement commenced in the 1860s, with the sugar industry firmly established by the 1890s. Proserpine serves as the administrative centre of the Whitsunday Region and a gateway to the Whitsunday Islands, with its airport providing access to the Great Barrier Reef. Notable features include heritage-listed Art Deco architecture along Main Street and the nearby Peter Faust Dam on the Proserpine River.
