About Coppabella (Qld)
Coppabella is a rural locality in the Isaac Region of central Queensland, on the Peak Downs Highway about 145 kilometres south-west of Mackay. It grew up around the rail network serving the region's coal industry: the locality was established by Queensland Railways to house train crew and maintenance staff, and its name, chosen for the railway station in 1971, is said to be an Aboriginal word meaning a crossing place. The Goonyella railway line runs through the area with branch lines serving the Millennium and Moorvale coal mines, and Coppabella has its own primary school.
