About Moranbah
Moranbah is a coal mining town in the Isaac Region, Queensland, located 195 kilometres southwest of Mackay. Founded in 1969 by the Utah Development Company, it was purpose-built to service the Goonyella and Peak Downs coal mines in the Bowen Basin. The name derives from an earlier pastoral station, likely of Aboriginal origin with an unrecorded meaning. The area was first explored by Ludwig Leichhardt in 1845, with pastoral settlement commencing in the 1850s. The town has a subtropical semi-arid climate and serves as the administrative centre of the Isaac Regional Council.
