About Purga

Purga is a rural locality in the City of Ipswich, Queensland, situated approximately 12 kilometres south of Ipswich CBD. The name derives from an Aboriginal word meaning a meeting place, and the area was historically the site of the Purga Aboriginal Mission, which operated from 1892 to 1948. The Purga Aboriginal Cemetery, listed on the Queensland Heritage Register, contains marked graves with timber crucifixes and concrete headstones dating from 1918 onward. Coal mining was once significant in the broader Purga district.
