About Yamanto

Yamanto is a suburb of Ipswich in the City of Ipswich, Queensland, Australia, located approximately 5 kilometres south-west of the Ipswich central business district and 47 kilometres south-west of Brisbane. The suburb takes its name from an 1860s cotton plantation originally spelled "Yamahanto," a 50-acre property jointly owned by Queensland's first government medical officer Henry Challinor and his cousin George Miles Challinor. Earlier names for the area included Mine Accident, Loamside, and Yahmahnto, all associated with the railway station on the now-defunct Dugandan railway line. Yamanto borders RAAF Base Amberley to the north-west and adjoins the developing Ripley Valley growth corridor. Amberley District State School, originally founded in 1862 as Warrill Creek State School, was relocated to Yamanto in 2010 due to the expansion of the air base.
