About New Chum

New Chum is a suburb of Ipswich, about 9 km from the city centre, named after the New Chum coal mine developed by James Gulland from 1876. Underground coal mining continued into the late 20th century, and in 1964 dinosaur footprints were discovered in the Rhondda colliery 230 metres below ground. The suburb now also hosts a landfill site.
