About Taroom

Taroom is a town on the Dawson River and the Leichhardt Highway in the Shire of Banana, Queensland, about 380 kilometres north-west of Brisbane. The name comes from an Aboriginal word for the native lime tree of the district. Ludwig Leichhardt passed through the area in 1844, and a Coolibah tree in the main street bearing a carved message from his expedition is heritage-listed. The settlement grew around Stoney Crossing on the Dawson River from 1856, and the town remains a service centre for sheep, cattle and grain country.
