About Allenstown
Allenstown is a suburb of Rockhampton in Central Queensland, about 1.6 km south-west of the city centre, and Rockhampton's first suburb south of the Fitzroy River. It was named after William Allen, who subdivided land here in 1864 and sold building blocks cheaply to working families, prompting residents to call the district Allen's Town. The suburb grew with Allenstown State School (1877), the heritage-listed South Rockhampton Cemetery and St Joseph's Catholic Cathedral (1899), and it retains a busy shopping strip along Dawson Road.
