About Tam O'Shanter

Tam O'Shanter is a small rural locality in the Cassowary Coast Region of Far North Queensland, inland from Mission Beach. The area is covered by dense tropical rainforest, including the Tam O'Shanter State Forest, part of the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area and an important habitat for the southern cassowary. The locality is thought to take its name from Tam O'Shanter Point, named by Captain Owen Stanley after the barque that carried Edmund Kennedy's ill-fated expedition to North Queensland in 1848.
