About Low Isles
Low Isles is a pair of coral islands about 15 km north-east of Port Douglas on the Great Barrier Reef, made up of the sandy Low Island and the mangrove-fringed Woody Island joined by a hook-shaped reef. The islands carry the first lighthouse built in Far North Queensland, erected in 1878, and were the site of the world's first detailed scientific study of a coral reef in 1928. Known to the local Kuku Yalanji people as Wungkun, the isles are a popular snorkelling day trip from Port Douglas.
