About Innisfail
Innisfail is the largest town in the Cassowary Coast Region of Queensland, on the junction of the Johnstone and South Johnstone rivers about 5 km from the coast and one of Australia's wettest towns. Settled in 1879 by the Irish sugar grower Thomas Henry Fitzgerald and known as Geraldton until 1910, it is the centre of a sugar and banana-growing district beneath Mount Bartle Frere, Queensland's highest mountain. Rebuilt in art deco style after a destructive cyclone in 1918, the town was again badly damaged by Cyclone Larry in 2006.
