About East Innisfail
East Innisfail is a suburban locality in the Cassowary Coast Region of Far North Queensland, located 1.9 kilometres south-southeast of the Innisfail central business district. Named for its position east of the Innisfail township, the broader area was originally called Geraldton from 1879 and renamed Innisfail in 1910 to avoid confusion with Geraldton in Western Australia. Innisfail comes from the Irish Inis Fail meaning island of destiny, an ancient name for Ireland. The locality is bounded by the Johnstone River to the north and the South Johnstone River to the west. The heritage-listed Innisfail Water Tower is on Mourilyan Street and the Jubilee Bridge, originally built in 1923 and replaced in 2011, links to the Innisfail CBD over the South Johnstone River. The area has strong Italian, Greek and Maltese cultural heritage from post-World War II migration.
