About Gordonvale
Gordonvale is a sugar-growing town on the Mulgrave River, about 20 km south of Cairns in the Cairns Region of Queensland. It developed around the sugar industry on the river's alluvial plain, overlooked by the distinctive peak of Walsh's Pyramid and the Bellenden Ker Range, with the Mulgrave Sugar Mill operating since 1896. The town was renamed Gordonvale in 1914 after local pioneer John Gordon. It is remembered as the place where cane toads were first introduced to Australia in 1935, in a failed attempt to control cane beetles.
