About Aloomba

Aloomba is a rural town and locality in the Cairns Region of Far North Queensland, situated approximately 6.7 kilometres east-southeast of Gordonvale and 30 kilometres south of the Cairns CBD. The name derives from the Yidinji word Ngalumba, meaning hard milkwood tree, and the locality is hemmed in by mountain ranges either side of the Mulgrave River. The area is dominated by sugarcane farming with a network of cane tramways delivering harvested cane to the Mulgrave Sugar Mill, while the heritage-listed Aloomba Hotel and General Store reflect the township's early twentieth-century development.
