About Clifton Beach (Qld)
Clifton Beach is a coastal suburb in the Cairns Region, Queensland, situated on the Coral Sea approximately 22 kilometres north of the Cairns city centre. The area lies within the traditional country of the Djabugay people and was named after Clifton in the Darling Downs, the birthplace of the wife of local sugar cane farmer William Fairweather who laid out the access road. Officially declared a suburb in 1959, it developed from the 1970s as a mix of residential and holiday living, with the Captain Cook Highway providing access. The beach is subject to crocodile and marine stinger activity, with a netted swimming enclosure in the north.
